Standing Witness, site: Sage Creek, is a hand-drawn animation that records and illuminates the temporality, fragility, and vastness of the land around the Sage Creek Campground in South Dakota’s Badlands National Park. Graphite is set into motion through the animation process. The drawings depict grasses, sagebrush, and crumbling dirt evolving over time. The constancy of the horizon in the Great Plains dissolves into an ever-changing scene. These patient moving drawings that explore terrain become a visual poetry of place, allowing a viewer to relax into their rhythmic movement or to pause and catch detailed fragments of this overwhelming space.

Standing Witness, site: Sage Creek, opened October 15, 2015 and closed January 3, 2016 at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts as part of MAEP (the Minnesota Artist's Exhibition Program).  This large projection was based on the animation shown in summer 2014 at Sage Creek. (See site: Sage Creek project.)  More than half of it was redrawn and it doubled in length, becoming a more meditative and quiet experience for the viewer within the darkened gallery space.
